Cargo throughput at India Port of Mumbai slid 4.5 percent year-over-year in the first half of fiscal year 2013-14, according to the port authority.

Total tonnage from April to September was estimated at 27.6 million tons, down from 28.8 million tons in the same period last year. The port authority said it had set a target of 30.6 million tons for the six-month period.

Inbound volume was 18.5 million tons, decreasing from 20.13 million tons, while outbound traffic was 9 million tons, up from 8.65 million tons.

Tonnage in September was 4.84 million tons, increasing slightly from 4.63 million tons.

Container traffic in the first fiscal half fell 36.5 percent from a year earlier to 19,354 20-foot-equivalent units. Box volume in September totaled 3,052 TEUs, down from 5,456 TEUs in the same month last year.

The port trust recently signed a contract with Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors for maintenance dredging of its cargo berths in an effort to ease draft restrictions.
